  6.     R.A.F. to U.S.A.F.: Gotcha!

  8.     People in parts of Nevada and southern California have
  9. noticed the loud sonic booms and strange pulsing noises for
  10. months. Seismologists at Caltech have been picking up echoes of
  11. extremely fast overflights heading east from Los Angeles. Now
  12. Royal Air Force radar technicians at the NATO base in
  13. Machrihanish, Scotland, have identified the cause of it all.
  14. Officially, the U.S. Air Force is mum. But insiders say Lockheed
  15. has been test-flying AURORA, the top-secret hypersonic U.S. spy
  16. plane, code-named "Senior Citizen," which can fly at speeds
  17. exceeding 4,000 m.p.h. That's about 90 min. from Washington to
  18. Baghdad.

  20.     Urban Renewal, L.A.-Style

  22.     Some merchants in burned-out Los Angeles neighborhoods may
  23. not be able to rebuild, even if they have the resources. They
  24. need permits. Many Angelenos in the ravaged areas are expected
  25. to oppose permits for so-called nuisance businesses: liquor
  26. stores, pawn shops, auto-repair shops and cheap motels. Says one
  27. gang member: "We were doing some renovation to the neighborhood.
  28. There are too many liquor stores in our community."

  30.     An Idea Whose Time Has Passed

  32.     Now that the "evil empire" has collapsed, many U.S.
  33. conservatives are eager to convert the Chinese to capitalism.
  34. Their nostalgic solution: RADIO FREE CHINA. The project would
  35. cost $110 million to launch and $34 million a year to operate.
  36. Among its critics is Chinese dissident Nien Cheng, author of
  37. Life and Death in Shanghai, the diary of her harsh 6 1/2-year
  38. imprisonment during the Cultural Revolution. Cheng notes that
  39. millions of Chinese are already devoted to Voice of America. And
  40. the new service might "give hard-liners an excuse to crack down
  41. on dissidents."

  43.     Your Enemy Is My Enemy

  45.     "Former KGB agent seeks employment in similar field. Tel:
  46. Paris 1-442-506 . . ." When spies have to resort to classified
  47. ads in French newspapers, times are clearly tough. Now 500 or
  48. so former Soviet intelligence agents have decided to network.
  49. Headed by onetime KGB Colonel Igor Prelin, the group has even
  50. started its own publishing arm, called Intel. Among the projects
  51. in the works: a memoir by a KGB agent who obtained American
  52. nuclear secrets, and a book by another who had dealings with Lee
  53. Harvey Oswald prior to November 1963.

  57.     Convinced that Harvard University's 32-year-old Let's Go
  58. travel handbooks have grown a bit stodgy, students from the
  59. University of California, Berkeley, are fanning out to describe
  60. the world in their own funky Fodor's series, THE BERKELEY
  61. GUIDES. The free-wheeling new guides offer warnings about
  62. beaches that "suck" and restaurants that are "yucko." The guides
  63. are printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink. Sniffs Pete
  64. Deemer, publishing director of the Harvard series: "Theirs may
  65. be more environmentally friendly, but ours won't get thrown out
  66. as much."

  73. Altman's The Player. Now he's skewering politics with Bob

  79.     Congressmen are fleeing Washington. Many career Capitol
  80. Hill aides are also depressed and planning to quit. Look for
  81. soft real estate values in northern Virginia.

  86. trips (for private things like playing golf). Over at Clinton
  87. headquarters, frazzled aides talk about a scarcity of "face
  88. time" -- opportunities to talk to the candidate in person. Next:
  89. "ear time," those moments when the boss is actually listening.

  93.     Rappers "sample," building songs on pieces of other
  94. people's music. But with Gilbert O'Sullivan and others suing
  95. over it, sampling is getting expensive. On their new albums, the
  96. Beastie Boys and Ice-T feature actual musical instruments. Next
  97. they'll be carrying a tune.
